Garengeot’s Hernia: Clinical Case Description

Abstract

Garengeot hernia (GH) is a rare condition defined by the presence of the vermiform appendix within a femoral hernia sac, often diagnosed intraoperatively due to its nonspecific clinical presentation. A 51-year-old female presented with a painful right inguinal bulge associated with diffuse abdominal pain. Imaging studies suggested an incarcerated femoral hernia without clear identification of its contents. Surgical exploration via inguinal approach revealed an incarcerated appendix with distal inflammatory changes, confirming the diagnosis of Garengeot hernia. Appendectomy and hernia repair using the modified McVay technique and polypropylene mesh were performed. The patient had an uneventful recovery, discharged on postoperative day 2, with no complications during follow-up. Although rare, GH should be considered in the differential diagnosis of incarcerated femoral hernias. Preoperative diagnosis remains challenging and is often established intraoperatively. Management should be individualized based on surgical findings, with favorable outcomes when appropriately treated.
