More than Just a Respiratory Infection: Influenza B as a Cause of Acute Pancreatitis

Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas caused by intrapancreatic activation of digestive enzymes, resulting in self-digestion of the parenchyma and systemic inflammation. The most common causes are gallstones and excessive alcohol consumption, although viral infections may also be involved. Among these, Paramyxoviridae, hepatitis A, B, and E, Coxsackievirus, and cytomegalovirus stand out. Pancreatitis associated with influenza B is rare, described only in clinical cases, and may result from direct damage to acinar cells or an immune-mediated mechanism. We describe a case of acute pancreatitis associated with Influenza B infection and review the literature on viral pancreatitis.
